Géza Maróczy

Géza Maroczy [ ɡe ː tsi ː zɒ mɒro ] ( born March 3 1870 in Szeged, † May 29, 1951 in Budapest) was a Hungarian chess grandmaster.

Life

Géza Maroczy first played correspondence chess. 1893/94 he won the heavily-stocked first Hungarian Remote tournament along with Charousek.

Maróczys first major success in the early 20th century was the second place behind Emanuel Lasker in the Nuremberg Master Tournament 1896., He was considered a serious contender for the title of world chess champion, a match against Lasker did not materialize due to financial reasons. During this time Maroczy won the tournaments in Monte Carlo in 1902 and 1904, Ostend 1905, Barmen 1905 and Vienna 1908. During the following years he was schachlich little active.

Due to the political events after the First World War had to leave Maroczy Hungary. In 1921, he played a match against the eventual World Champion Max Euwe, his coach he was; the match ended in a draw. He won the tournament in Karlovy Vary 1923 ( together with Alekhine and Bogolyubov ) and Hastings in 1924/25. In three Chess Olympiads (1927, 1930 and 1933 ) as well as the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich in 1936, he was the top player of the Hungarian team.

In 1950 he was among the first members appointed by the world chess organization FIDE grandmasters.

He was also a chess literary activities, including in 1909, he published a biography of Paul Morphy. He also coached the first women's world champion Vera Menchik.

As he was particularly strong in defense and in the final, especially in the women's final.
