The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, gave him on 17 July of the same year the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Henri Antoine Marie Teissier, Archbishop Emeritus of Algiers, and Michel Sabbah, Patriarch Emeritus of Jerusalem. As a motto he chose Confirma fratres tuos.
