Gharyan (Arabic غريان, Ġaryān DMG ) is a city in northwestern Libya and the capital of al - Jabal al - Munizips Gharbi.
Location
It is one of the largest cities in the Jebel Nafusa to 639 m and is located about 90 km south of Tripoli.
Population
In the city of some 150,000 inhabitants. The majority of the population make Berber.
History
The city was once on important trade routes through Libya. 1884 Gharyan was built by the Ottomans and was given its own management structure. In the 1920s a railway line between Tripoli and a village was built near Gharyan under Italian occupation, which was destroyed during World War II by British troops. The city was also one of the centers of resistance to the Italian occupation.
Gharyan formed with the surrounding private Munizip until the area in 2007 was to become the newly formed Munizip al - Jabal al - Gharbi.
