Giacomo del Duca

Giacomo del Duca called Jacopo del Duca (* 1520 in Cefalù, † 1604 in Messina ) was an Italian architect and sculptor. He was a pupil of Michelangelo in Rome.

1588 Giacomo went back to Messina, where he was appointed in 1589 to the city architect of Messina.

Works in Rome: 1573-76 Built Giacomo the dome, the tambour and the lantern of the church Maria di Loreto, Antonio Sangallo had as designed.

Works in his hometown of Messina ( as Thieme -Becker):

In 1599 he completed (after earlier reports, very splendid ) Sea facade of the "Loggia dei Mercanti " on the waterfront of Messina. There, a stone was to be read with the following inscription in Latin: "UT Mercatorum Utilitati civium Ornamento regiae URBIS MESSANAE Regni PROTO METROPOLIS DIGNITATI CONSULERETUR .. " heavily damaged by the earthquake in 1783, the building was demolished in 1810. Also, the rear facade of the church of San Giovanni di Malta, 1592 is derived from Giacomo, as is the Capella del Sacramento in the cathedral in Messina with an octagonal tabernacle on the altar. As an architect Duca is for the development of Roman architecture is important because it is considered the most independent eigenarigtste and pupil of Michelangelo.
