Gian Antonio Selva

Gian Antonio Selva ( born September 2, 1751 Venice, † January 22, 1819 ) was an Italian architect and most important representative of the Venetian classicism. His most important works include the opera house Teatro La Fenice in Venice and the Opera House Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste.

Life

His family came from Friuli. His father was an optician. After Gian Antonio Selva had first studied mathematics with his uncle in Vicenza was Tommaso Temanza his teacher. 1778 to 1780 he undertook a study tour of Florence to Rome, where he became friends with Antonio Canova. He traveled to England, the Netherlands and Paris. In 1787 he was socio di Merito and in 1807 Professor of Architecture at the Accademia. In 1807 he was ingegnere civile for the entire kingdom. Through the creation of a first development plan in collaboration with Antonio Diedo he influenced the cityscape of Venice.

  • Teatro La Fenice (1790-1792)
  • Together with Antonio Diedo he renewed the façade of San Maurizio in Venice ( 1806).
  • The Church Nome di Gesù ( Jesus' name ) was completed according to plans by Antonio Selva Diedo (1810 ).
  • Conditioning the Giardini pubblici, now largely Biennale area (1810 ).

  • Palazzo Mangilli Valmarana, Venice, Grand Canal, Cannaregio (1784 renovation and addition )
