Giancarlo del Monaco

Giancarlo del Monaco (* December 27 1943 in Venice) is an international Italian opera director.

Life

Giancarlo del Monaco was born the son of the tenor Mario del Monaco and made his debut as a director in 1964 in Syracuse / Sicily with the opera Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint- Saens, in which his father interpreted the title role. Subsequently, he was internationally as an assistant director (of Wieland Wagner, Günther Rennert and Walter Felsenstein ) and director in action. A number of productions he worked first at German city theaters.

In 1991 he brought La Fanciulla del West at the Metropolitan Opera out, and then he staged there also Stiffelio, Madama Butterfly, Simon Boccanegra and La forza del destino.

He was also active as a chef and director of opera houses and festivals including the Staatstheater Kassel (1980 to 1982), the Macerata Festival (Italy, 1986-1988 ), the Opera Bonn (1992 to 1995) and the Opéra de Nice / France (1997 to 2001).

Since 2009 he has been artistic director of the opera festival in Tenerife.
