Gianpiero Fiorani

Gianpiero Fiorani ( born September 12, 1959 in Codogno, Italy ) is a former Italian bank manager and next especially Antonio Fazio one of the main characters in the Italian banking scandal involving the attempted takeover of Banca Antonveneta in 2005, referred to in Italy as the " Banco Poli ".

Fiorani was the head of the Italian regional bank Banca Popolare di Lodi in Lodi Lombard provincial capital. When the Dutch bank ABN Amro gave a public takeover bid for Banca Antonveneta in 2005, this applied to the rejection of the Italian central banker Antonio Fazio, who refused the necessary permits and the process to the detriment of ABN Amro delayed. In this situation, led by Banca Popolare di Lodi Fiorani was from a rival bid for the much larger Banca Antonveneta. Probably this step of the ambitious Fiorani with Fazio was matched. Anyway, he met his benevolence, because the central bank put the offer of Banca Popolare di Lodi no obstacles in the way, although in the press very soon cast doubt on whether the Fiorani Institute have the necessary resources for this major acquisition.

It was found that Fazio and Fiorani had overstepped the mark. So they probably had not expected that ABN Amro further pursued the takeover plan, even against the resistance of the same functions as banking supervision in Italy Central Bank. ABN Amro was the process path and mobilized the support of the European Commission. The perception of the behavior of Fazio in public as arbitrary and critique of the European Commission eventually led that this had to resign, as the contents of telephone calls was known between Fazio and Fiorani. At the same time doubts as to the balance sheet conditions in anticipation of the desired magnification in Banca Popolare Italiana renamed Bank of Fiorani compacted. As proved later, Fiorani had greatly embellished by complex transactions, the equity of his bank to allow its expansive course. Also dubious measures to improve the earnings of the Bank were revealed.

In December 2005, Fiorani was arrested, but was soon released. Banca Popolare Italiana had to be rescued by other banks of the Italian cooperative banking sector from the changes introduced by Fiorani difficulties. Fiorani and Fazio must now appear in court because of the former operations. Because of the hopelessness of the Italian justice system is not to be expected that the operations that, in any event, be made transparent in the near future by judicial to the public, in many parts are still unclear.
