History

In Rendsburg to 1937 there was a connection between the Kiel Canal (NOK ) and the lower Eider: During the construction of a new lock NOK 1893 created, replacing the former entrance gate of the Eider Canal in 1784. Because the location in the old town of Rendsburg lock complex urban traffic but disabled, it came to planning a more favorable connection between the ports of the lower Elbe and the lower Eider. A channel in the valley of Gieselau should connect the Kiel Canal at Oldenbüttel ( approximately 20 line kilometers southwest of the old town) and the south of the Eider Prinzenmoor together.

The Gieselaukanal was built from 1936 to 1937; but he does not use the bed of the separated by the North Sea-Baltic Canal creek. The channel runs just twice the old moat and has nothing in common except the name with the Bach Gieselau. The Rendsburger lock was subsequently filled. By means of a 65 m long and 9 m wide lock, which is located approximately at the midway point of the Gieselaukanal, the different water levels between NOK and Eider can be compensated.
