Gill Sans

The font Gill Sans is a linear sans, which was designed by Eric Gill 1928-1930. Gill Sans is based on Edward Johnston ( Gill mitgestalteter ) Johnston Sans font and is appreciated for its quiet elegance and their versatility. The letters shapes and proportions are based on Renaissance Antiqua.

A special feature is that the different typefaces not systematically build on each other, but each have their own character. Italics, in which some letters handwriting similar shapes as in the italics of roman typefaces, there is only the font styles Light and Regular.

She was known by the use in the London and North Eastern Railway and later in the British Rail.

Since 1997, Gill Sans is used at the BBC as a font for their logo and the logos of individual shipments.

Furthermore, a modified form of Gill Sans bold typeface for signs and directions was used away from highways in the GDR and replaced here the DIN font. On the highways, however, the DIN font remained.

With the delivery of Gill Sans with the operating system Mac OS X Font input found in numerous publications.

Due to the great popularity there are also imitations such as Humanist 521 Bitstream.
