Salmo stomachicus

The Salmo stomachicus is a species of fish in the salmon family (Salmonidae ), which is endemic in the Lough Melvin in the north of Ireland and possibly in other Irish and Scottish lakes.

Features

The kind reaches a length of up to 36 centimeters. The body height is found from 3.3 to 3.8 times in standard length. Body and fins are golden brown to yellow with numerous black spots, plus bright orange - red spots, which are found mainly above and below the lateral line organ.

Way of life

Salmo stomachicus inhabited shallow water areas of the lake. As a food are mainly snails and caddis fly larvae, besides other soil-dwelling invertebrates. From November to December spawn is placed near the Seeablaufs and possibly on the sandy north shore.

Threat

Salmo stomachicus is listed in the Red List of endangered species as threatened ( Vulnerable ).
