Gilli (prime minister)

Gilli or Gille lived around the year 1000 in the Faroe Islands and is the first Faroese Løgmaður (then Chairman Thing ) mentions the Faroe Islands. The term used at that time was lögsögumaður " county judge ".

The following article is a retelling of those places in the Faroese, where Gillespie is mentioned. The annual figures are estimates reconstructed by GVC Young, 1982.

In 1024 he went with Leivur Øssursson and Tórálvur Sigmundsson at the behest of King Olav II Haraldsson to Norway. Actually also Tróndur í Gotu should be one of the party, became ill but before departure. Olav concern was to establish a royalist rule over the Faroe Islands. The three did what the King asked, and took an oath to him.

After a Norwegian ship that would collect taxes on the Faroe Islands for the Norwegian Krone, disappeared without a trace, and Olav in 1026 asked his three followers to be sent this Tórálvur going on with a team, but were pursued by Tróndurs men. Tórálvur was in Norway - almost before the eyes of the king - killed. Only Charles of Møre was then brave enough to lead an expedition to the Faroe Islands to solve the case.

Leivur Øssursson and Gille 1028 should work together on the next Thing in Tórshavn with Karl. Also Tróndur cooperated ( very half-heartedly, as it turned out ) with the Norwegian ambassador, and as they drove the outstanding taxes on the whole a Faroes. However, there came a year later when Ting to a bloodbath calculated in Tróndurs tent where Karl was murdered. At the same time also Sigurd Torlaksson have murdered one by Gilles men. Gille and Leivur refused the then-common man money, but were responsible for the expulsion of the offender from the Faroe Islands. At the same time, it ended Olavs to collect taxes from the Faroe Islands.

The following year ( 1029 ) the three perpetrators, Sigurd Torlaksen, Tord came the Small and Gaut the Red with an armed group of 30 men back to the Faroe Islands. Gille and Leivur had no other choice but the face of this overwhelming power to embark under the protection of Tróndur í Gotu, who ordered that the men were allowed to settle again in the Faroe Islands. Tróndur shared the Faroe Islands into three parts: one for a Leivur Øssursson and one for Sigmundur Brestissons sons for themselves.

Summary

GVC Young assumes that Gille was the Løgmaður the Faroe Islands before the visit to King Olaf, and that he was not only the supreme judge in this function, but also a kind of president. It also follows from the Faroese that the Faroese Thing not only one dish was, but at the same time a legislative assembly. Until about 1273 the log ( søgu ) Madur was elected by the Thing.

While you do not even know the name of the Løgmenn to 1524 ( with the exception of Sigurd ) for a long time, Gillespie is mentioned in the first book about the Faroe Islands, Færoæ & Færoa Reserata 1673 by Lucas Debes - so good 150 years before the Färingersage of Carl Christian Rafn was compiled from Icelandic legendary material and released.
