Gillian Weir

Dame Gillian Constance Weir DBE ( born January 17, 1941 in Martinborough, Wellington Region, New Zealand) is a New Zealand organist and harpsichordist.

Biography

After school she studied organ and harpsichord at the Royal College of Music in Kensington ( London) and won there in 1964 an international organ competition. The following year, she made her debut as an organist at a concert at the Royal Festival Hall and was a soloist at the opening of Night of the Proms 1965.

In the following years she has performed with leading orchestras under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Raymond Leppard, Charles Mackerras and others, and played at numerous music festivals and in concert halls.

In addition, she hosted the BBC television in his own TV series titled The King of Instruments and was not just a regular writer, commentator and juror at competitions, but also consultant of organ builders.

For their achievements in music, she was appointed in 1996 to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and since then has held the title Lady.

Dame Gillian Weir, also a guest musician on the organ of the Salt Lake Tabernacle in 2007 was, in addition, also as organist Georg hail, Malcolm Archer and Christian Schmitt private lessons.
