Gino Loria

Gino Benedetto Loria ( born May 19, 1862 in Mantua, † January 30, 1954 in Genoa ) was an Italian historian of mathematics.

Loria studied mathematics in Mantua, Pavia and Turin and was awarded his doctorate in 1883 in Turin. After that, he was assistant to Enrico D' Ovidio at the university. From 1886, he was (as a result of a competition then usual ) professor of algebra and analytic geometry in Genoa. During the persecution by the fascists ( Loria was a Jew ), he hid himself among the Waldensians in Val Pellice. Loria employed, inter alia, to with projective geometry and special algebraic curves. He is best known as a historian of mathematics. He wrote a history of mathematics and dealt specifically with ancient Greek mathematics.

He was since 1897 the editor of the " Bolle Tino di storia delle bibliografia e matematiche science ".

Loria was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and the Turin Academy of Sciences.

The asteroid ( 27056 ) Ginoloria was named after him on 28 January 2002.
