Giorgi Arsenishvili

Giorgi Arsenischwili (Georgian გიორგი არსენიშვილი; born January 5, 1942 in Chirsa, Kakheti, † 17 November 2010) was a Georgian mathematician and politician.

Life and career

He studied at the Faculty of Tbilisi State University mathematical and technical. After his doctorate, he was from 1974 to 1979 worked at the University of Heidelberg. He then served as a professor of Applied Mathematics at the State University of Tbilisi.

From 1995 to 1999 Arsenischwili worked in the administration of his home province of Kakheti. After the re-election of Eduard Shevardnadze to the Georgian president this Arsenischwili appointed on 11 May 2000 as prime minister. During his tenure, there was a split within the Georgian Citizens Union, which supported Shevardnadze. Many young, reform-minded politicians, such as Zurab Zhvania and Mikheil Saakashvili, were very disappointed by the failure of the president in the fight against corruption. After the presidential veto against a law which provided for the disclosure of the income of government employees, many of them left the government offices and left the country. Middle of 2001 citizens lost the Union as the parliamentary majority and the Arsenischwili government got into trouble. President Shevardnadze dismissed then organized the remaining ministers and then Arsenischwili. His successor was Awtandil Dschorbenadse.

Arsenischwili was appointed as the new Ambassador of Georgia in the Czech Republic on December 29, 2001. This office he held until 15 July 2004. From 2006 to 2007 he was a member of the Board of the Georgian Railway.
