Giorgos Kaminis

Giorgos Kaminis (Greek Γιώργος Καμίνης; born July 15, 1954 in New York ) is a Greek Constitutionalists. He was from April 2003 to September 2010 the Greek Ombudsman and was elected November 14, 2010 the mayor of Athens.

Biography

Kaminis was born in New York, where his father worked for the Greek shipping magnate Stavros Livanos. Later the family moved to Osaka to Japan, before returning to Athens in 1962.

Kaminis studied law at Athens University. After completing his studies he completed a post -graduate degree in Public Law at the University Panthéon- Assas, after his graduation from the University of Paris I, where he graduated in 1982. After that, he was awarded a research fellowship at the University of Athens, where he worked as an assistant professor and as an assistant from 1991 as lecturer and from 1998.

From 1998 to 2003 Kaminis was deputy ombudsman for human rights, from April 2003 until his resignation in September 2010 Ombudsman.

Kaminis is married and has two daughters.

Mayor

In the local elections in November 2010 as an independent candidate Kaminis supported by the Social Democratic government party PASOK, environmentalists / Greens, the Democratic Left, the Drasi and the Liberal Alliance against incumbent Nikitas Kaklamanis for the office of mayor of Athens. He received the second ballot with 52 percent of the vote and was able to win the responsibilities at the head of the Greek capital against the conservative New Democracy party, which it had held for 24 years.
