Giovane Scuola

Giovane Scuola ( Italian for " Young School" ) is a group of Italian composers called around 1900, who wrote the main thing operas.

They followed on Giuseppe Verdi, who had for many years dominated the Italian opera, but oriented more towards French ( Jules Massenet ) or German ( Richard Wagner) models. Some were close to the verismo movement that was perceived internationally as a renewal of Italian opera. The realism in the literature gave the opera valuable impulses, especially in relation to the libretto design, dramaturgy and fabric choice.

To Giovane Scuola, the composer Francesco Cilea, Alberto Franchetti, Umberto Giordano, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Pietro Mascagni and Giacomo Puccini to be expected. Even the slightly younger Lorenzo Perosi, who composed primarily sacred music is counted them.
