Giovanni Andrea Bussi

Giovanni Andrea (de) Bussi, also Ghjuvan Andria di Bussi, (* July 14, 1417 in Vigevano, † February 4, 1475 in Rome ) was an Italian bishop, humanist and the first librarian of the papal library.

Life

Bussi 1451 entered the service of Pope Nicholas V. From 1458 to 1464 he was papal secretary and close confidant of Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa.

1461 he was appointed by Pope Pius II as Bishop of Accia in Corsica, 1464 Vicar General " in spiritualibus et pontificalibus " the Archdiocese of Genoa, on the basis of the official inability of its bishop. In July 1466 he was appointed Bishop of Aleria. 1471/72 he was appointed the first librarian and secretary of the papal library. He was succeeded in 1475 Bartolomeo Platina.

Bussi was for the printer Arnold Pannartz and Konrad Sweynheim numerous writings of classical Latin authors out, eg Livius Andronicus in 1469, and enriched the Vatican Library to many classical manuscripts.
