Giovanni Antonio Magini

Giovanni Antonio Magini (* June 13, 1555 in Padua, † February 11, 1617 in Bologna ) was an Italian astronomer and mathematician.

Magini studied by the year 1579 in Bologna philosophy, and later devoted himself to astronomy. In 1582 he published the work Ephemerides Coelestium motuum, which was translated into Italian a year later. In 1592 he published De Planis triangulis, where he described the use of the quadrant. In 1607 he published the astrological work De Astrologica ratione.

Magini also created an atlas of Italy (Atlante geografico d'Italia ), which was not published until the year 1620 by his son.

In 1935, the lunar crater Maginus was named after him.
