Giovanni Battista de Rossi

Giovanni Battista de Rossi ( Gian Battista de Rossi ), ( born February 23, 1822 in Rome, † 20 September 1894 in Castel Gandolfo ) was an Italian Christian archaeologist and epigraphists. He is regarded as the founder of scientific Christian Archaeology and the early Christian epigraphy.

De Rossi studied law in Rome and published his first archaeological work in some magazines. He treated initially mainly the early Christian inscriptions and then was under the guidance of his teacher and idol Giuseppe Marchi a pioneer in the study of the Roman catacombs. From about 1850 he discovered 27 catacombs, including St. Callistus catacombs.

1847 turned the historian Theodor Mommsen in a letter to de Rossi and asked him for his support in the monumental work Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum the Prussian Academy of Sciences. This collaboration is an intense friendly relationship developed.

In 1847 he became a member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeological, 1853 he became a corresponding, in 1851 a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. In 1867 he became a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, 1886, he received the Order Pour le Mérite.

The results of his research, he has published numerous works, including the " bull Tino di Archeologia cristiana ", which he published from 1863 itself.
