Giovanni Battista Guglielmini

Giovanni Battista Guglielmini ( born August 16, 1763 in Bologna, † December 15, 1817 ) was an Italian scientist. It is known that he proved experimentally as the first rotation of the earth.

Biography

After studying philosophy and a two-year period of study in Rome, he wrote the essay in 1789 Riflessioni sopra un nuovo esperimento in prova del diurno moto della terra ( reflections on a novel experiment to demonstrate the rotation of the earth ). The experiment described here, the measurement of Ostablenkung in free fall, he led in 1791 to the tower Asinelli by. The findings were published 1792. Since the Coriolis force on the Ostablenkung based was at that time not yet fully understood, was his experiment, as it later turned out, erroneous and its conclusions inadequate. However, they formed the basis on which Johann Friedrich Benz Berg ( 1802 and 1804) and Ferdinand Reich constructions (1831).

From 1794 to 1817 was Guglielmini mathematics professor at the University of Bologna. From about 1802 to 1810 he was responsible for the municipal water supply system. He was probably not a direct descendant of the famous physicist and engineer Domenico Guglielmini. His health was not good and he died at the age of 54 years.

In 1837, the City of Bologna has put him in the town cemetery, a monument in the form of a marble statue.
