Giovanni Capellini

Giovanni Capellini (born 23 August 1833 in La Spezia, † May 28, 1922 in Bologna ) was an Italian geologist and paleontologist.

From 1856 to 1858 he studied in Pisa and the following year he traveled through France, England, Switzerland and Germany. In 1860 he became a professor in Genoa and in 1861 professor of geology and paleontology at the University of Bologna, he was its rector in 1874. In 1888 he was elected member of the Learned Society Leopoldina.

In Bologna he founded the Geological Institute and the International Congress of Anthropology and Prehistoric Archaeology.

On December 4, 1890 Capellini was included in the Senate of the Kingdom of Italy.
