Giovanni da San Giovanni

Giovanni da San Giovanni (* March 20, 1592 in San Giovanni Valdarno, † December 9, 1636 in Florence, born Giovanni Mannozzi ) was an Italian painter of the Baroque.

Life and work

For the son of a notary, a clerical career was originally intended, but he decided after a short time against the plans of his father Giovan Battista di Agnolo Mannozzi. Giovanni, who received his nickname after his hometown, was formed in 1608 from Matteo Rosselli, one of the leading artists in Florence at this time. Probably he was also in regular contact with Giulio Parigi since those years. From 1612 Giovanni is detectable as a member of the Accademia del Disegno.

Among the more important early works include decorations in the Casa Buonarroti and large-scale frescoes in the Church of Ognissanti. From 1617 he is officially court painter to the Medici. Several orders of later years were devoted to the picturesque decoration of palace facades and are therefore no longer or receive only very fragmentary, one exception is the 1619/20 together with Parigi -made painting of the nearby Piazza Santa Croce show facade of the Palazzo dell'Antella dar. between the years 1621 and 1628 he considers himself - initially together with Francesco Furini - in Rome and here leads numerous works from, then he returned to Tuscany. The last major commission, the painting of Salone on the ground floor of the Palazzo Pitti was because San Giovanni interrupted by the death of Giovanni, the frescoes were later students and fellow painters ( including Furini ) completed.
