Giovanni Francesco Pressenda

Giovanni Francesco Pressenda ( born January 6, 1777 Lequio Berria at Alba, † December 12, 1854 in Turin ) was an Italian luthier.

Pressenda, born the son of itinerant musicians, the father learned to play the violin. His training workshop as a violin maker is currently not assignable, older sources name Lorenzo Storioni as his teacher, recent research refute this and go from acting in Turin luthier Nicolas Lété - Pillement, who came from the French Geigenbaumetropole Mirecourt from. Pressendas violins are characterized by a good tone. He built this on a model by Antonio Stradivari, but with slightly higher sides and a less clean elaborated screw. The instruments were after the violinist August Wilhelmj played since the end of the 19th century on a Pressenda highly valued.

Pressendas work influenced the Italian violin making of the later 19th and early 20th century. Among his pupils was Giuseppe Antonio Rocca. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the value of his instruments in the upper price range, also were and are often copied. As the best copyist of Pressenda violins applies Fagnola Annibale ( 1865-1939 ).
