Giovanni Paolo Colonna

Giovanni Paolo Colonna (* June 16, 1637 in Bologna, † November 28, 1695 ) was an Italian organist, conductor and composer.

After his training in Rome, he was first employed there as an organist, but returned in 1659 to his hometown, where he first worked at S. Petronio from 1674 as organist and as conductor. He was co-founder of the Accademia dei Filarmonici, the predecessor of the Accademia Filarmonica.

He created a large number of sacred vocal music, including 13 oratorios, six of which have been preserved. Three of his five operas were for performance in his native city. He is counted among the major Italian church musicians of his time.
