Girolamo Bernerio

Girolamo Bernerio OP ( * 1540 in Correggio, Emilia -Romagna; † August 5, 1611 in Rome) was a bishop of the Diocese of Ascoli Piceno and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

The son of Pietro and Antonia Bernerio Doria was related with the Cardinals Scipione Cobelluzzi, Francesco Cennini de Salam Andri and Desiderio Scaglia.

He entered the Order of the Dominicans, studied theology and philosophy. The Convention of Cremina belonging, he was a theological adviser to the local bishop, and was inquisitor for Genoa. Finally, prior of the convent of the Dominicans in Rome, he was appointed on August 22, 1586 Bishop of Ascoli Piceno and on September 7, 1586 in the Roman basilica XII. Apostoli ordained a bishop. Principal consecrator was Giulio Antonio Santorio, co-consecrators were Giulio Masetti, Bishop of Reggio Emilia and Ottaviano Paravicini, Bishop of Alessandria.

Collected on November 16, 1586 cardinal priest, he received on January 14, 1587 Title church of S. Tommaso in Parione. Since November 8, 1589 with the title Sopra Minerva church provided, he was also protector of the Order of Servites. At the conclaves of 1591 and 1592 taking part, it was on June 17, 1602, Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo. Collected on 16 June 1603, Cardinal Bishop of Albano, he resigned the bishopric of Ascoli - Piconi before January 7, in 1605.
