Giuseppe Callegari

Cardinal Giuseppe Callegari (* November 4, 1841 in Venice, Italy, † April 14, 1906 in Padua ) was bishop of Padua.

Life

Giuseppe Callegari studied at the University of Venice, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on March 26, 1864 Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a professor of moral theology at the Patriarchal Seminary of Venice as well as a parish priest. In 1878 he took on the additional task of a consultant at the Diocesan Tribunal. He has written numerous articles for the newspaper " Il Veneto Cattolico ". 1880 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Bishop of Treviso, 1882 Assistant at the Papal throne and appointed Bishop of Padua. In 1892 he declined the appointment as Patriarch of Venice, and proposed instead his longtime friend Giuseppe Sarto, who later became Pope Pius X.. From 1893 headed Giuseppe Callegari as president of the Catholic Scientific Society in Italy. Pope Pius X took him on November 9, 1903 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin per hac vice in the College of Cardinals to. Cardinal Giuseppe Callegari died on April 14, 1906 in Padua and was buried in the local shrine of d' Arcella.
