Giuseppe Piermarini

Giuseppe Piermarini ( born July 18, 1734 Foligno, † February 18, 1808 ) was an Italian architect. His most famous building projects include the Milan opera house, Teatro alla Scala.

Biography

Giuseppe Piermarini was born on July 18, 1734 in Foligno. After studying architecture at Luigi Vanvitelli at Rome he assisted his teacher between 1765 to 1769 during the construction of the Palace of Caserta, near Naples. In 1770 he started his first own project: the renovation of the University of Padua. Between 1776 and 1778, he was commissioned to design the Milan opera house Teatro alla Scala, which was to be his most famous project.

At the same time followed Piermarini the call to the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and took over the chair of architecture.

1777 Piermarini began with the construction of the Royal Villa of Monza; In 1778 he built the Galleria Nuova, a corridor in the Ducal Palace in Mantua. More developments followed: Palazzo Greppi (1772-1778), Palazzo Belgioioso (1772-1781) and the facade of the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio Prepositurale (1780 ) in Parabiago.

Piermarini in 1798 returned back to his home town of Foligno, to contribute to further building projects. He died on 18 February 1808 in Foligno.
