Giuseppe Simone Assemani

Giuseppe Simone Assemani (* 1687 in Tripoli ( Lebanon); † January 14, 1768 in Rome), sometimes also written Asseman, was an orientalist.

From Maronitenfamilie Assemani coming, he was a seminarian at the Pontifical Maronite College and studied in Rome. He then took the papal mandate traveling through Egypt, Lebanon and Syria, where he collected numerous oriental manuscripts, coins, etc. for the Vatican Library. After the end of his travels, he was curator of the Vatican Library and Titular Archbishop of Tyre.
