Givi Javakhishvili

Givi Javakhishvili (Georgian გივი ჯავახიშვილი; born December 18, 1912 in Tbilisi / Georgia, † November 10, 1985 ) was a Georgian politician and 1953-1975 Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Georgian SSR.

Life

Givi Javakhishvili was born the son of the physician Dmitri Javakhishvili and Ana Magalaschwili. In 1934 he graduated from the South Caucasian Industrial Institute with a degree in engineering geologist. From 1934 to 1952 he worked in various local and party organizations. In 1952, he was employed as vice-mayor, the same year as Lord Mayor of Tbilisi. From April to September 1953, he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Georgian SSR and thereafter until December 18, 1975 its chairman.

During his tenure, he led the Commission for the Protection of the Georgian language. In 1968 he was the chairman of the Commission on 800.sten birthday of the poet Shota Rustaveli. He was several times member of the High Council of the Georgian SSR and USSR. Twice led Javakhishvili the Georgian delegation at an Expo in Brussels in 1958 and 1968 in Montreal.

1961 Javakhishvili held at the meeting of the CPSU in Moscow gave a speech in which he called for the repatriation of mortal remains of Stalin from his mausoleum on behalf of the Georgian delegation ..

A Philharmonic and a sports palace were built in Tbilisi on the initiative and with the support of Javakhishvili. In 1966 he opened the first subway station in Tbilisi.

During his tenure as chairman, the longest in the history of Georgia, received Javakhishvili visits by Jawaharlal Nehru, Margrethe II, Georges Pompidou, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Fidel Castro.
