Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 18 to 24 millimeters. Front and hind wings are colored black gray brown to almost black. The midfield is a bit darker, limited by indistinct transverse lines and provided with a black Diskalfleck. The hind wings have only a vague or barely perceptible drawing. At the outer edge fine black fringes are visible in all wings.

Similar Species

In Glacies noricana the drawing shimmers sometimes slightly greenish, while the front wing at Glacies coracina are often dusted whitish and also drawn more contrast.

Distribution and habitat

The species occurs in the high altitudes of mountains, so mainly in the Alpine countries, but also in the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine. Glacies alpinata rises to heights of 3000 meters, the main habitat is stony alpine meadows and scree margins.

Way of life

The moths are diurnal and fly restless in the sunshine close to the ground. They like to rest with flat wings outstretched on stones and rocks, where they are very well camouflaged because of their coloring. Main flight period are the months of June to September. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various plants and lower overwinter.

Endangering

In Germany Glacies comes alpinata only in the Bavarian Alps before, but here area as numerous. The species is therefore managed on the Red List of Threatened Species as not at risk.
