Glaciokarst

Glaziokarst is an essential modification of karst phenomena, which usually occurs in high mountains in karst areas of temperate and subtropical latitudes.

Develop in extremely karstified areas ( Holokarst ) glacier, so these are not the only Karstrelieff adapt, they evolve in this, which leads to so-called karst glaciers. Karst glaciers were first described in 1913 by Jovan Cvijić from the Prokletija in the Dinarides. Notified under the recent karst glaciers are those of the Dachstein mountain range.

From Glaziokarst is when a karst area in the Pleistocene large area glaciated and usually only after melting of glaciers karstification has been activated. This mixed forms of glacial erosion and karst landscapes have emerged that behind areas occur in the limestone Alps Karwendel, the Hochdinariden Orjen, the Taurus, in the Picos de Europa, the Pyrenees or the Caucasus.

Since Glaziokarst mainly occurs in heavily in relief high mountains, typical manifestations are usually found in alpine stages. If, as in subtropical Orjen also areas below 1000 m show symptoms of Glaziokarstes, these are caused by deep snow line in the Pleistocene, have led to far reaching down Glazialerscheinungen. Features of Glaziokarstes are flat sinkholes, layer stairs, large vertical shafts ( by glacier melt) and various small forms on typical Glazialformen.

In Northern Europe, but also to find Glaziokarstlandschaften verebneten Kalkflächen that were previously covered by ice.
