Gladys Marín

Gladys del Carmen Marín Millie (* July 16, 1941 in Curepto, Chile; † 6 March 2005 in Santiago de Chile) was General Secretary of the Communist Party of Chile.

Life

Gladys Marín's political activity became known as the General Secretary of the Communist Youth League in Chile, the Youth of the people's government of the Unidad Popular mobilized. Her personal friends included Pablo Neruda, Salvador Allende, Luis Corvalan and Víctor Jara.

When Pinochet coup of September 11, 1973, she was separated from her children; her husband, Jorge Muñoz is considered missing and was probably murdered by the rebels.

Gladys Marín went into hiding and later found in the Netherlands, East Germany and the Soviet Union an exile.

In 1978 she went back to Chile and worked in the underground. Later, she was General Secretary of the Communist Party and was a candidate for the office of president in Chile. She led in the 80s to mass protests against Pinochet fought for the abolition of posts originating from the Pinochet dictatorship constitution, for the punishment of Pinochet and all criminals of the dictatorship. In 1998, she filed the first lawsuit against Augusto Pinochet for human rights violations.

She died on 6 March 2005 in Santiago from cancer. Previously, she lived in Cuba, where they had gone for medical treatment. On March 8, 2005, a state funeral was scheduled. With great sympathy of the population (press estimates are 500000-1000000 people ) her coffin from the Ex - Congreso at the Moneda was accompanied by the Central Cemetery. For 7 and 8 March was ordered by the Chilean government of national mourning. In the Comuna Estación Central in Santiago de Chile a central street was named after her (the old " Avenida Los Pajaritos ").
