History

1824 Georg Gleistein & Son was founded by sailing ship captain Georg sliding stone together with his eldest son, John. 12 employees (" Reepschläger " ) processed the then available in Europe natural fibers ( hemp, tow ) crafted into ropes. Customers were freight and boatmen, shipping and agriculture. The rope factory with a 380 meter long, so-called Reeperbahn was in Vegesack, along the Kirchheide between Georg- slip stone road and Fährgrund.

The advent of new fibers such as sisal and Manila enabled new technical products. With the Hercules rope trawlers were fitted from 1890. At the former headquarters Vegesack was built at that time just on the later largest herring fishing fleet in Europe. In 1947, the first use of chemical fibers, which then displaced the natural fibers in the 1970s begins.
