Glen Housman

Glen Clifford Housman ( born September 3, 1971 in Rockhampton, Queensland ) is an Australian former swimmer who won the silver medal in the 1,500 -meter freestyle at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Career

Beginning

Housman reached the international level in swimming, having over 400, 800 and 1,500 -meter freestyle won at the Australian Swimming Championships in 1989, for which he was nominated for the 3rd Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo. There he won the gold medal in the 1,500 -meter freestyle. He began to improve, and finally broke out in 1990 at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide the world record in the 1,500 -meter freestyle, which he did for the Commonwealth Games qualifying 1990. This world record, however, was not counted because the electronic timing failed, even though he clearly was before the world record time. Because of this error, the Commonwealth Games were awarded to Kuala Lumpur in 1998. At the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland Housman won the gold medal over 1500 meters freestyle and the silver medal in the 400 meters freestyle.

Summer Olympic Games in 1992

In 1991, Housman was sidelined because of an illness and thus watch as Kieren Perkins aufstellte the new world record in the 1,500 -meter freestyle. At the 1992 Summer Olympics he was, however, recovered. About 1,500 meters freestyle he swam a very strong race, but was in turn defeated by Perkins and thus won the silver medal. 1993 ill Housman again and gave in 1994 at the Commonwealth Games comeback. There he won the bronze medal on the 1,500 meters and the 4x200 -meter freestyle relay gold medal.

Summer Olympic Games 1996

Housman's last international appearance at the 1996 Summer Olympics was a disappointment. He did not qualify for the 1,500 -meter freestyle and when he swam 4x200 meter freestyle relay only in forward direction, while the relay took fourth place at the end.
