Goanna (Band)

Goanna is an Australian band that combines social protest with popular music.

Name

The band was founded by Shan Howard in 1970 as The Goanna band. The name was retained until 1979 and then converted to Goanna. Goanna is the name for a type of lizards that live in Australia and Tasmania.

The band produced Spirit of Place, which was chosen by the Australian Music Industry ( ARIA ) for best album of 1982; Solid Rock was voted best single of the year. Solid Rock deals with the expulsion of the Aborigines by the Europeans. The song was marketed worldwide. In the conflicts of the environmental movement to the Franklin Dam in Tasmania with the government, they recorded the song Let the Franklin Flow. It became the protest song of this movement and reached # 12 in the Australian charts. They brought out also the song Sorry, a song about the Stolen Generation of Aboriginekinder.

The band contributed three songs ( Common Ground, Song for Africa, Solid Rock ) at Sydney Sports & Entertainement Center in 1985 prior to the concert Oz for Africa as part of the global Live Aid concerts. Their latest album, Oceania, they released in April 1985. This album was in May 1985 to the 20th place in the Australian charts. 2006, numerous songs of the Goanna band by radio station Triple M have been played in a contest and they achieved good results there. The band Goanna is known throughout Australia.
