The excavation is located in the municipality of Tabelot about 180 kilometers east of Agadez and 150 km south-east of the Aïr Mountains. 2008 were found there by archaeologists from the University of Chicago, the oldest graves of the Sahara. The age of the 200 completely undisturbed preserved tombs with grave goods were determined by radiocarbon dating. They come from two periods of the Holocene, the former from 7700-6200 BC, which later began after a 1000 - year break to 5200 BC and lasted until 2500 BC

The finds show that today's desert at that time was a water-rich lakes landscape, the inhabitants of the first epoch lived as a largely sedentary hunters, fishers and gatherers. They were tall as evidenced by the graves that were found at the former lakeshores and big-boned. The cause of their withdrawal from the region, a long-running drought is assumed.

Around 1000 years later populated small and petite people built the region again. Their food basics were collecting shells, fishing and hunting wild animals of the steppe. In addition, were the beginnings of cattle.
