Gudgeon ( gobio Gobio )

Gobio is a genus midget carp fish. The 21 valid species mainly inhabit clear running waters in Europe and Asia. Two species, the gudgeon ( gobio Gobio ) and Gobio macrocephalus, penetrate well into the brackish water.

The representatives of the genus have a stretched, only slightly flattened usually almost cylindrical body. The significantly under constant has narrow mouth and soft lips. A pair of barbels is always present. The toothless jaws are dull and without horn pad. All types have two series of teeth gullet of which the first is usually occupied by five, the second row having two or three teeth. The cylindrically shaped pharyngeal teeth are equipped with pointed hook-shaped tips that grinding surfaces are reduced.
