Gobioninae

Gudgeon ( gobio Gobio )

The Gründlingsverwandten ( Gobioninae ) are a subfamily of the carp family (Cyprinidae ). They live with over 200 species in China, Japan and Korea, the genus Gobio in northern Asia and Europe. Gobioninae keep preferably in the lower and middle water layers.

Features

The Gründlingsverwandten are small to medium sized freshwater fish. They differ from the other sub- families of the carp fish by the shape of the frontal bone and the supraoccipital, another skull bone, as well as by characteristic formations at the front vertebrae that form ossified swim bladder capsules in some genera of Gründlingsverwandten. The first three rays of the dorsal fin are always undivided and never heavily ossified. The lateral line runs when it is not reduced to the middle of the caudal pedicle. Gründlingsverwandte have one or two rows of pharyngeal teeth. The tip of the snout never wears barbels.
