Gobustan District
The rayon Qobustan is an Azerbaijani administrative district with the capital Mərəzə. As a landscape designation Qobustan also includes the south-east, bordering on the territory of the region.
Geography
The rayon has an area of 1369.4 km ². The region is mountainous, there are deposits of oil, gas and building materials. In rayon are several mineral springs.
History
From 1930 to 1943 and from 1960 to 1990, the territory of the county Qobustan was part of the district Şamaxı.
Population
The district had 2009 40.000 inhabitants., Spread over 35 settlements.
Economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. It is grown mainly for corn and wine, and operated livestock.
Attractions
In Märäzä the mausoleum of Diri Baba sufististischen mystic ( "living grandfather " ) from the year 1402. There are also still several additional mausoleums and shrines of Islam and of older religions.
