GOCR

GOCR is a free text recognition software (OCR ) by Jörg Schulenburg, which is operated by command line commands.

GOCR recognizes simple texts quite well, up to a comparison with conventional commercial programs, however, hardly stood. It recognizes different printer fonts without having to resort to a database, which makes the application very easy. In addition to plain text, the program can also decode common one-dimensional bar codes.

Availability

The program is distributed as free software in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License ( GPL). Originally, the program was released for Linux, now also binaries for Windows and OS / 2 are available, which are provided by the external programmers Peter BL Meijer and Franz Bakan available. The program is included in all major Linux distributions. It is used, for example, Kooka, scanner software under KDE, as a back -end.

History

The first version (0.1) was created in the fall of 1998. The first official release was done with version 0.2.1 in March 2000 on Freshmeat. Since mid- 2000, the project is hosted on SourceForge. As was noted in the release of the source code on SourceForge.net that already existed a project named GOCR, the project management also introduced the name JOCR one for the program.
