Godfrey Henschen

Godfried Henschen or Godefridus Henschenius ( born January 21, Venray 1600, † September 12, 1682 in Antwerp ) was a Jesuit priest and associate editor of the Acta Sanctorum.

Biography

Godefridus Henschenius entered the Society of Jesus in 1619. He distinguished himself especially by his knowledge of Greek and Latin as well as in church history.

1635 his teacher Jean Bolland drew him added to the preparation of his monumental work begun by the Acta Sanctorum. At the invitation of Pope Alexander VII and the Jesuit General Goswin Nickel Henschenius traveled on behalf of the sick Father Bolland to Rome in 1660 to gather material for the Acta Sanctorum in the local libraries. He was accompanied by a younger brother named Daniel Papenbroeck, who also led a diary of the two -year journey, which appeared in 2002 in German translation and religious- folkloristic is of very high value.

After the death Bollands 1665 Henschen continued to work on the Acta Sanctorum, together with Father Papenbroeck away, who had accompanied him on his journey to Rome.
