Godfried Schalcken

Godfried Schalcken (* 1643 Made / North Brabant, † November 16, 1706 in The Hague ) was a genre and portrait painter and etcher. On October 31, 1679, he married Francoise van Diemen (* 1640 to Breda ) in Dordrecht; with her he had three sons: Godefricus Schalken, Francoise Schalcken and Francois Schalcken.

Life and work

Schalcken lived during the Golden Age. He painted mostly portraits and genre pictures with night light effects in extremely smooth coloristic treatment. Pictures of him are abundant in England, furthermore in Vienna ( a Reading Age ), Berlin ( Angel Lad ), Dresden ( The Flirty, Girl Reading a Letter, Young man and female bust, eggs girls), Amsterdam, Munich ( Alte Pinakothek ) ( Penitent Magdalena, Wise and foolish virgins ), Paris, and the Hague, etc. He had also erased some leaves.

He studied with Samuel van Hoogstraten in Dordrecht and then moved to Leiden in the workshop of Gerard Dou [note To learn 1] ( a pupil of Rembrandt ).
