Dordrecht

( Listen? / I ) Dordrecht is a city and municipality of the Dutch province of South Holland and counted on 1 January 2013 as declared by the CBS 118 528 inhabitants. Dordrecht is located about twenty kilometers south-east of Rotterdam. Their total area is 99.45 km ². It is the third largest city in the province and around the arm of the Rhine Beneden Merwede splits into the Noord channel, the Oude Maas and the Dordtse Kil. The " Three Rivers Eck" in the north of the island of Dordrecht is the busiest waterway in the Netherlands.

History

Dordrecht received its town charter in 1220, making the city the oldest in the former Holland (but not in the Netherlands) is. 1421 were flooded with the Saint Elisabeth flood large parts of southern Holland, causing Dordrecht was to the island. The strategically valuable location of the city, which also had a stack of law, made from about 1299 into an important trading center. Trade goods at the place were wine, wood and grain. 15-16. July 1572 were representatives of most cities in the Netherlands in Dordrecht, in the building " Het Hof " together. There they made William of Orange as its leader and declared their independence from Spain. These Dordrecht national assembly marked the start of the Dutch struggle for independence. 1618/1619 was held in Dordrecht Dordrecht Synod as an important religious gathering of the two Reformed churches of the Netherlands held to discuss the Statenvertaling, the first Dutch translation of the Bible. 1632 was decided at a meeting convened by the Dutch Mennonite Dordrecht Synod the Confession. In the 18th century the importance of Dordrecht in favor of Rotterdam was significantly reduced.

Through the centuries, Dordrecht has played a key role in the defense of Holland. Until well into the 20th century Dordrecht was a garrison town. In the Benthienkazerne along the Oude Maas pioneers were stationed. During the mobilization in August 1939, teams were sent to Dordrecht to defend the island. During the Second World War Dordrecht and its surroundings, the center of battles in 1944/ 1945.
