Papendrecht

Papendrecht ( listen? / I ) is a city and a municipality in the Netherlands, South Holland province. Their total area is 10.77 km ², of which 1.29 km ² water surface. Papendrecht has 32 ​​095 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Location and economic

The city is situated on the river island Alblasserwaard, the waters Noord towards Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht. With, inter alia, these neighboring communities, it is the economic and cultural cooperation association " Drechtsteden ". The community is located at the beginning of the A15 motorway Dordrecht - Tiel - Arnhem. There is also a ferry for pedestrians and cyclists between Papendrecht Dordrecht and called waterbus. Papendrecht has as its neighboring communities little agriculture and many commercial, also due to the laying nearby ports.

History

Papendrecht 1005 is first mentioned in a document. A blurry image of this document can be found on the Town website. From 1277, when the Alblasserwaard had been diked, it evolved as the neighboring villages to an elongated fishing and farming settlement on the River dike. Many residents remained even after the Reformation in the 16th century Catholics ( papen = priests, an insult to Catholics ). The cultivation of peas gave the Papendrechtern another nickname, namely " erwtenpellers " ( = Erbsenpeller ).

From about 1890 the industrialization began with the establishment of shipyards that have now received a majority again. In 2007, created a new center for Papendrecht: The Meent. Papendrecht is the town of Blomberg in East Westphalia -Lippe since 1975 twin city.

• Collectie Rietgors is a significant art collection from the 20th century, including works by the CoBrA group. It is housed in a museum on the market ( can only be visited in the afternoon, closed on Mondays).
