Voorschoten

( Listen? / I ) Voorschoten is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland.

Location and economic

The village Voorschoten lies immediately south of suffering and lies between the railway line The Hague - Leiden in the west and the Rijn - Schie canal in the east. To the west lies Wassenaar and south Leidschendam. East of the church is the Vliet, arising out of a gravel pit a recreation area; behind it passes a road The Hague - Amsterdam. Voorschoten has two small stations: one on the western edge and a ( De Vink ) on the northwestern border of suffering.

In the community, many commuters who work in The Hague or Leiden live. Voorschoten has quite a few agricultural and small commercial enterprises.

History

As early as 2000 BC, there was a settlement on the territory of the present municipality of Voorschoten in the range of Bosch Geest. There, fishermen and hunters have lived. The Roman name was Forescate.

The elongated shape of the settlement originated in the Middle Ages. Count Floris V of Holland granted the site in 1282, the market rights.

From 1858 to 1985 Voorschoten was the seat of a very large, silver -processing workshop, you can probably classify as a factory. In the first decade after the Second World War Voorschoten is very grown from just under 5500 inhabitants in the year 1934 about 9300 inhabitants in early 1946 to now more than 22,000 inhabitants.

Even in this century Voorschoten will always have more inhabitants. Therefore, the new settlements Starrenburg, Krimwijk and Starrenburg II arise

Attractions

  • Duivenvoorde Castle (built in 1631 on the site of a demolished castle ) is to visit in the summer; the castle is a museum. The surrounding park is accessible all year round for a fee.
  • The old village center, with the voorstraat many old homes is a listed building ( beschermd Dorpsgezicht = protected landmark ).
  • The July 28, held annually since 1282 horse market.
  • Not far from the town is the former country estate / farm Vredenhof, which had been almost entirely destroyed during the Eighty Years' War from by pulling Spanish troops. Same also was revitalized by Diederik Jansz. Graeff, and remained until the 18th century belonged to the Amsterdam De Graeff family.
