Alblasserdam

Alblasserdam ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. Within the municipal boundaries are no more places, except for a part of Kinderdijk.

Location and economic

Alblasserdam lies in the west of the polder Alblasserwaard. The branch of the river Noord separates the city from the south-west neighboring communities Ridderkerk, Hendrik -Ido- Ambacht and Papendrecht. In Hendrik -Ido- Ambacht is an exit of the motorway A15 (Rotterdam / Dordrecht - Arnhem / Nijmegen ). From there you can first reach the industrial area and then the center of Alblasserdam. In this highway, a tunnel leads directly south of Alblasserdam pass under the North. Those who have no car, you have to travel to Rotterdam and Dordrecht to Ridderkerk. There you can take the bus to Alblasserdam.

History

The history of Alblasserdam begins about before about 700 years. The name is first mentioned in a chronicle of Melis Stoke from 1299. At the time, Alblasserdam and Oud- Ablas together to form a unit. The old center of the village, was hit by bombs during the very outbreak of the Second World War in the Netherlands, on 11 May 1940. Fortunately, the historic Kerkstraat and the characteristic dike building was mostly not affected.

In the history of Alblasserdam the water has always played a major role. The town's name is from the river Alblas ( east of the village ) will be derived. There, a dam was built.
