Fop Smit

Fop Smit ( born October 11, 1777 Alblasserdam; † August 25, 1866 in Nieuw- Lekkerland ) was a Dutch ship owners and ship-building business. He was the founder of the company Smit International, which in 1842 with a steam tug took up their service. The company currently has a turnover of 470.3 million euros (2006).

Miscellaneous

1838 built Fop Smit of Kinderdijk his first ship for service in the Netherlands East Indies. Four years later he built a steam tug, to perform the towage between Helvoet, Brouwer Haven, Dordrecht and the North Sea on behalf of some shipowners and insurers can.

The company established itself always more to the towing service from and built over the years a large number of tractors. 1900 International Sleepdienst is established.

1847 is built on behalf of the shipowner Willem Ruys the Brigantine industry in Fop Smit in Kinderdijk. It was the first iron sailing ship that was built in the Netherlands.

1853 built Fop Smit the first iron clipper, the California, a ship of 663 tons for the shipping company Louis Bienfait & Zn on the first ride went captain Jaski in 86 days from the Downs to Port Adelaide. Other known clippers were the Kosmopoliet II ( built 1862) and the Noah I to VI. The Noach I drove in 65 days of Anjer through the Sunda Strait to The Lizard in the English Channel.

Family

Smit married on 29 June 1806 Alblasserdam Jannigje Pieterse Mak. He was the son of Jan Smit and Foppe Marijge Ceele. The grave of the Smit family is Lekdijk at Nieuw- Lekkerland.
