Nieuwkoop ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland.

Since January 1, 2007 Nieuwkoop, together with the former municipalities of Ter Aar and Liemeer a new church named Nieuwkoop.

Location and economic

The somewhat remote community is located in the so-called Groene Hart ( Green Heart ) Holland: Ter Aar is situated directly north of Alphen aan den Rijn, Nieuwkoop and Nieuwveen a little further east. The area is characterized by a fen landscape with many meadows, streams and lakes. Especially for water sports tourism of importance are the Nieuwkoopse plassen and the smaller Langeraarse plassen. The Amstel, which flows into the IJ in Amsterdam yes, its course starts at Papenveer and forms the municipal boundary to Uithoorn and De Ronde veins. Rail travelers who want to visit the church to rise by at the stations of Alphen aan den Rijn, Amsterdam or Woerden on the bus, unfortunately this is a pretty beschwerdliche travel. In the area there are no highways, the roads are good but passable.

History

The territory of the municipality of Nieuwkoop was until about 1050, a largely inaccessible marshland. Then began local men, surrendered land for pay reclamation to farmers and parishes; such a plot was called cope (modern Netherl: koop, German: Department ); the place name derives Nieuwkoop here. Zevenhoven 1085, first mentioned urkündlich; In the Middle Ages the village for the property tax of seven farms was struck. Later peat was recovered from the peat bog, leading to the emergence among others, the Nieuwkoopse plassen ( Nieuwkooper Lakes ) led. The village Langeraar went in a flood disaster in 1788 and was completely lost completely rebuilt at a different location. The area has always been dominated by agriculture; to 1900, many residents were quite poor, and lived by cutting peat, the production of Reetkörben, agriculture and fishing in the many lakes and rivers. It is striking that in the mid-19th century, many inhabitants of the village Nieuwkoop exercised a blacksmith. After 1950, a significant garden restaurant with cultivation came on in greenhouses.

Attractions

  • The Nieuwkoopse plassen are a major water sports area, with marinas ( in Nieuwkoop ), boat rentals, restaurants, etc.
  • The small Langeraarse plassen other hand, are much quieter.
  • Nieuwkoop, Nieuwveen and Ter Aar each have a small museum. The caption at the exhibits is only in Dutch.
  • The narrow road on winding creek along Meije is very picturesque; elsewhere can make cycling in the polders.
  • In the village there is an old court house Nieuwkoop ( Regthuys ) from the year 1628.
