( Listen? / I ) Binnenmaas is a municipality in the Netherlands, South Holland province.

Places

The community Binnenmaas in 1984, by the union of five municipalities:

  • Maasdam (where the local government is located)
  • Puttershoek
  • Heinenoord
  • Mijnsheerenland
  • West Maas

On 1 January 2007, the "old " church Binnenmaas was combined with the 's- Gravendeel the new community Binnenmaas.

Location and economic

The community forms the northeastern part of the polder " Hoeksche Waard " and is not far from Dordrecht. It is a long, narrow lake, " Binnenbedijkte Maas " or " Binnenmaas " called. This lake was to 1270 a branch of the river the Meuse.

Many residents commute to work every day to Dordrecht and Rotterdam. Also the tourism and agriculture and horticulture are significant. Moreover, there is in the community a large sugar factory.

Partnerships

The municipality is twinned with the German community Mossautal in the Odenwald.

Attractions

The villages in the municipality have almost all an old village church, mostly from the 15th, 16th or 17th century. Also there are many monumental farmhouses and some palatial mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries. The community Binnenmaas promotes tourism greatly. There are some small recreational beaches and surfing opportunities.

The local museum ( Streekmuseum Hoekse Waard ) in Heinenoord is located in an old mansion and an adjacent, dating from the 17th century farm. The local museum represents the history of the region

The small dikes in the polder are particularly suitable in the early summer for a bike ride.

Famous people

Puttershoek is in all of the Netherlands is famous for having that Kees Verkerk, who was one of the first Dutch was the 1969 world champion in speed skating, comes from this place. His father was the owner of the village pub.
