Leiderdorp

Leiderdorp ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. Within the municipal boundaries are no other residential projects.

Leiderdorp is almost grown together with suffering, but both communities are separated by the river Zijl.

Leiderdorp maintains a partnership with the Slovak community Šamorín.

History

Roman time

The history of Leiderdorp starts in Roman times. At the beginning of the third century after Christ there was a Castle, which was probably inhabited by soldiers of the 30th Roman legion at Roomburg.

First settlement

The area of Leiderdorp was inhabited from the 8th century. 1952, the remains of old simple dikes were found.

According to written sources in the 10th century there were three districts that together formed " Holtland " which, the area between the rivers and Mare de Zijl and the north of the Oude Rijn - area encompassed the Waardeiland. The first graves were found in Holt Country. The names of the two provinces, ending in- holland, and the commonly common name "Holland" for the Netherlands have their origin in the term Holtland.

Middle Ages

The three districts that together formed Holtland, called also " Leithons ". From this term the names of the communities suffering and Leiderdorp come from. Leiderdorp originally extended almost to the center of Leiden, but had to keep parts of the territory ceded to the growing city.

During the Middle Ages, several forts were built in Leiderdorp. They were called Ter Does, Berend right Ter Mey, Stenevelt, Te Waarde and Zijlhof, but all are today no longer exists. Since the 14th century there is an Augustinian monastery Engelendael. It had large land areas and played an important role in the former Leiderdorp.

16th and 17th centuries

The Spanish commander Valdez established his headquarters in the old church of Leiderdorp. Around the village he had defenses, of which nowadays there is nothing to see, build. When the Prince of Orange had destroyed the dykes, the Spaniards withdrew.

The monastery Engelendael was ceded to the uprising against the Spaniards the Jonkheer Arent van Dorp, who had grind the monastery and dig the foundations.

In the period of Spanish occupation was the Count de Ligne Ambachtsherr Leiderdorp. He focused instead on his possessions in the southern Netherlands and withdrew from Leiderdorp. Therefore, the city of Leiden in 1597 received the rights of a Ambachtsherrn Leiderdorp.

After the French Revolution

After the French Revolution in 1795 the municipalities were in the Batavian Republic to the Leiderdorp belonged at that time, built. These are the forerunners of the modern communities. Also Leiderdorp was an independent municipality. Nothing changed in the very agriculturally oriented imprint of the community. However, many rich Leiden building built on Rijnufer ( the Rhine ).

In the 19th century the industrialization Leiderdorps began. 1884 separated the Gereformeerden of the Hervormden ( Reformed churches ), which would have resulted in Leiderdorp almost to civil war. For eight weeks, the army encamped in the village.

20th century

1914-1915, the so-called Oude Dorp ( Old Village ) was built. After the First World War, the village grew even further. In the mid-1950s, the A4 was built. The Leiderdorp Bridge was completed in 1964. The highway section Leiderdorp a long time into two parts. The area between the A4, the Doeskwartier and the Patrimoniumpark was still broke. With the construction of the Oranjewijks Doeskwartier and Patrimoniumpark with the old village were connected. In the sixties, the old village was structurally connected with the Wijk Ouderzorg.
